Lekani

Installation and Performance

LEKANI is a transdisciplinary and immersive installation performance articulated on several levels of research: movement, live camera capture, video projection, coding, music and costume design. The artists turn Foucault’s philosophical concept of the panopticon into the subject of the performance to immerse us into a closed, guarded environment – a modern panopticon – that explores observation and surveillance.

Digital devices create a closed guarded environment. The scene inside this space becomes multiplied by overlapping viewpoints and viewing possibilities in the projection. The visual artist, choreographs and interacts with the projections in real time.

The dancers create a choreographic dialogue by structuring two different modes of movement within the visual system. on one side there are two bodies moved by the continuous visual change, aroused by external systems and the possibilities that the body itself grants. On the other side, there is a body that experiences its stillness (the time reveals the movement), using vision as a method of action, and then breaks the stasis to join the other dancers in visible action.

Through movement, interconnected perception and audio-visual elements, the artists create a space where visitors and performers may temporarily dissolve their personal individuality, and become part of a new disciplinary universe, which exists in the intersection between art and technology.
